About Us

Our parent organization, The American Taekwondo Federation, was originally founded in 1971 by Grandmaster T.H. Kim from Seoul, South Korea.  Over 10,000 students have passed through our doors and well over 150 have achieved the rank of black belt.  Only a handful have achieved high-rank black belt and have dedicated their lives to keeping the organization alive and flourishing.

In 1993 the founder of American Taekwondo Academy opened his doors for the first time in Naperville, Illinois and has endured over two decades of change, growth and promotion of the overall spirit of Taekwondo.  It is through unsurpassed instruction and long-time dedication to the community that the American Taekwondo Academy credits its success.

Our newest location, now in Joliet, Illinois, promises to continue the legacy originally born in 1971. We will strive to reach our 75th Anniversary.  If you haven't already, make sure you visit us and learn more about our unique presence in the Taekwondo community!

Our Facilities

We deliver an environment that is welcoming and comfortable, and aim for our studio to feel less intimidating. Our goal is to not be too small where it is uncomfortable and crowded, but also not be too big where students run the risk of getting lost and ignored.  We feel we are reaching this goal and pride ourselves in offering a fun, safe, friendly and clean place to learn, enjoy and practice Taekwondo.  Make sure you set up some time to come visit us during one of our classes and see for yourself!

"The ultimate aim of the martial arts lies neither in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." -Grandmaster Tae Hyung Kim
